President, SR Strategy, LLC

Sylvia Rowe is currently president of SR Strategy pursuing communications and issues management consulting on a broad range of health, nutrition, food safety and risk issues.  She is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.

Previously Rowe served as president and chief executive officer of the International Food Information Council (IFIC) and IFIC Foundation, in Washington, DC, nonprofit organizations that communicate science-based information on food safety and nutrition issues to health professionals, journalists, government officials, educators and consumers.  IFIC’s programs are primarily supported by the broad-based food, beverage and agricultural industries.

During her eleven-year tenure, IFIC established itself as a leader in consumer research and consumer-based communications in nutrition, food safety, and health.  Rowe’s leadership resulted in national public-private partnerships and coalitions between IFIC and preeminent government agencies and health organizations committed to developing science-based consumer communications on healthful lifestyles.

President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Lucille Beseler is President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. A leader in the organization for many years, she is a past chair of the Academy’s Political Action Committee and a member of its Childhood Obesity Coalition. Beseler served for nine years as chair of the Florida Dietetics Nutrition Practice Council – the state licensing board for dieticians and nutritionists – and received a public service award from the Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Beseler established the Family Nutrition Center of South Florida in 1991, as one of the first nutrition practices pioneering HMO coverage of nutrition services dedicated to pediatrics. A professional speaker, Beseler is also author of Nurturing with Nutrition: The Essential Guide for Feeding Infants and Toddlers (Bazarte and Beseler 2003) as well as many articles and publications. She received Florida International University’s 2009 Path of Public Health Award in Nutrition and Dietetics for community work in the area of childhood obesity. Beseler is a graduate of Queen’s College – City University of New York and earned a master’s degree from New York University.

VP Nutrition & Wellness, Compass Group

Deanne Brandstetter, M.B.A., R.D. has over thirty years of experience in the food and nutrition business. Deanne is a registered dietitian and holds a New York State license as a certified dietitian-nutritionist. As vice president of Nutrition & Wellness for Compass Group, North America, she leads a team that coordinates wellness programs for foodservice clients and develops innovative & award-winning cross-sector nutrition and wellness initiatives. She also directed the nutrition program for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah as part of the Compass Olympics Lead Management Team.

Deanne earned an American Culinary Federation Silver medal for Healthy Cuisine, has authored numerous articles for professional and trade journals – including a module of the ADA Labeling Certification Course – and has presented programs at the Society for Foodservice Management, the American Dietetic Association, Foodservice Director magazine Menu Directions, Field to Plate-France, the National Restaurant Association and the CIA Greystone World of Healthy Flavors conferences. Deanne is a member of the AND Task Force on Menu Labeling, the AND Nominating Committee, IFIC Board of Directors and Executive Board, NRA Nutrition Executive Study Group, the Norwalk Community College Advisory Board, and co-chair of the CIA Healthy Menu R&D Collaborative.

Professor of Nutrition, Tufts University

Jeanne Goldberg, professor of nutrition, is Founding Director of the Graduate Program in Nutrition Communication at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.

Dr. Goldberg has worked on obesity and chronic disease prevention interventions since 1995 when she was principal investigator on a school-based intervention in Independence, Missouri and co-investigator on Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better, an obesity prevention campaign for African American women. She was co-investigator on the Bones Project to prevent osteoporosis through early intervention, Shape Up Somerville, a CDC-funded obesity prevention program for elementary school children and their families, and on a replication of that project. In 2007-2008 she was principal investigator on Tipping the Scales, a project designed to understand childhood obesity prevention in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. She was principal investigator on the study that led to the selection of the USDA / DHHS Food Guide Pyramid in 1992.

Senior Nutrition Marketing Business Partner, Kellogg’s

David Grotto is the Senior Nutrition Marketing Business Partner for the Kellogg’s Specialty Channels Division, where he provides nutrition solution guidance for K-12, colleges, travel, military, vending, convenience and food service. In addition to his work with Kellogg’s, Grotto is a bestselling author of three books including his latest, Best Things You Can Eat. He is also a freelance writer and serves as an advisor to Fitness magazine. Prior to his work with Kellogg’s, Grotto hosted a live radio show on health and nutrition for 10 years, as well as a local television show. He also served as a media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Grotto has more than 25 years of experience in the nutrition and wellness arena. He is a registered dietician and holds a Master’s in nutrition and wellness from Benedictine University.

Director, Sales Planning, Foodservice, Mondelēz International

Diane Striegel is Director, Sales Planning, Foodservice for Mondelēz International and brings 30 years of experience in nutrition and industry expertise to NAMA’s Nutrition Advisory Council.

In her current role at Mondelēz, Striegel is the K-12 advisor on product innovation, manages foodservice vending and trade strategies and has forged a strong working relationship with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. In prior roles at Mondelēz, she increased product usage through outreach and partnerships with the USDA, state agriculture departments, the School Nutrition Association (SNA) and local foodservice directors.

Prior to Mondelēz, Striegel worked in a variety of roles at Marriott Management Services, including Food Service Director for Time Warner, and Chief Dietician at two hospitals. Her accolades include the Patent Award from Vend Shelf Identifiers, the Value in Action Award from Project Gemini and Outstanding Clinical Manager from Marriott Health Care Services. Striegel is also actively involved in her local parish, serves on a youth ministry team and is an accomplished flute player.

Industry Advisor, Strategic Alliances, Alliance for a Healthier Generation

Elizabeth Mitas Vegas leads the Alliance’s efforts implementing voluntary agreements with the food and beverage industries that increase access to healthier foods and beverages and create healthier environments for children and families.

The Alliance approaches the issue of childhood obesity from multiple directions including corporate collaborations and relationships with leaders in the food, beverage, fitness, and healthcare industries.

Elizabeth joined the Alliance in 2009 after working in the private sector for a decade. She resides in Chicago with her husband and 2 children.
